Chapter Eleven

No doubt, her father would know she had been in his house within the hour. An anxious flutter took up residence in her stomach. Old fears that had diminished over time now reminded her they still lurked deep in her heart.

“He can’t hurt you anymore,” she said aloud. No laws were broken, well none he’d be aware of. He obviously hadn’t known about the journal, if he had, she was sure he would have removed it from the mattress. But he wouldn’t be happy about the invasion of his private space, and she knew he’d want to talk to her.

Well, he’d have to wait. She headed out of town, west on 52 along the Ohio River Scenic Byway toward Cincinnati. She would spend a few days in the city, get her bearings about her, and work on the case from a fresh setting. All excuses for avoiding her father.

The press conference was scheduled for Monday anyway, plus she wanted to submit her request to re-open the Harvey case.

With one pit stop to use the restroom, Kendal arrived at the FBI field office around five. Mike glanced up from his desk as she approached his office. He sat back in his chair, shaking his head. He knew. Her father had called him.

“What the hell are you doing out there to cause such havoc, Agent McNally?”

Never a good sign when he used Agent. It had the same effect as when her mom had been angry and called her Kendal Marie. “It’s my childhood home, sir. I just wanted to see the place again. The door was unlocked. I didn’t break in.”

“You weren’t invited in either.”

“Neither was Stacey Mulligan, but she walked right in.”

“She isn’t my responsibility, but you are. Chief McNally isn’t filing a complaint against her.”

“He filed a complaint?” Kendal stepped closer, her heart racing.

“He wants you off the case.”

“Sir, you can’t do that.”

Mike rushed to his feet, leaned across the desk daring her to defy him. “Yes, I can, Kendal, and I have every right to do so without reason. I am your boss, and you best not forget that.” He ran a hand through his thinning hair and blew out a frustrated breath. “But I’m not going to. I don’t care for Chief McNally’s attitude. He hasn’t wanted the FBI, especially you, there from the beginning. So you will stay on the case, but I need you to play by the rules, Kendal. Don’t give McNally a reason to call me again.”

“Yes, sir. Thank you, sir.”

Kendal swung into a drive-through and picked up dinner. At her apartment, not much bigger than the efficiency at the Silver Spur, she sat at her kitchen table, took a bite of her sandwich without tasting, and opened her mother’s journal.

It dated back two years before the suicide.

I look at my little girl and worry about what I am teaching her by staying with her father. Will she end up weak like me? But I don’t know what to do. I spend all my time thinking about leaving, but I’m too scared to make the move.
